About

Welcome To Direct Insight Counseling

Hello! I’m Henry Hosey

I am deeply inspired to help folks who are struggling with chronic pain, suffering grief and loss and for those who carry the burden of persistent anxiety and depression. It is my mission to help you see that there is a way out!

The Roots Of Inspiration To Help Others

As with most of the clients I now work with, I struggled with life.  My early years were spent mostly feeling isolated, scared, depressed and disliking myself. I avoided people and life. I struggled to find my own way. Three life experiences helped change this; a 2000 mile solo bicycle trip from Texas to Canada, the death of my first wife, and guidance from another helping professional that was unexpectedly transformative.

Texas to Canada

My initial desire to become a counselor was ignited in the summer of 1984, when I loaded up my bicycle and began a 2000 mile through the heart of America. This trip would change my life forever.

Before going on the trip, I continued to carry great sadness, pain, fear, and a recurring sense of worthlessness.

But the graciousness of people who took me into their homes I never forgot. Their willingness to help me and open to me changed how I felt about myself and others. I wanted to pay this new found feeling of freedom forward. I wanted to help others.

Men’s Grief

In 1994, my first wife’s death shook me in ways indescribable. I had never felt such pain and emptiness.

As a man, I knew that I needed the support of others, especially men. When I leaned into the support of my fellow man, I learned to open my heart and let go.

During my grief, I felt compelled to write and compose music and to share with others. I wanted other men to know that grief didn’t have to be a stranger and that we could actually experience it fully. Ongoing volunteer work with hospice as a group facilitator helped me to continue to do what I could to help those experiencing grief.

Chronic Pain-A Helping Hand

My desire to help others with chronic pain came from my own experience with chronic pain.  I had always been active; out there! I loved long rides on my  bicycle, pick-up games in basketball, and Aikido.

But there came a time when my own low back pain began to limit even simple movement.

After multiple visits to doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, neurologists, and back surgeons, I was still in pain and desperate for relief! I was on the verge of risky back surgery when a physiatrist made a recommendation to explore a revolutionary treatment for chronic pain. A new psychologically based approach called Pain Reprocessing Therapy or PRT.

I ate it up; reading all I could about it, and eventually took a training for certification in PRT. In the process I got better, remarkably better!

Now, I was inspired to make a difference for others who have felt the confinement of their pain and who want to re-discover the richness in their life.

How I Am Inspired As A Therpist

I am honored that my clients are courageous enough to share their struggles with me; their self- doubt, fear, anxiety, sadness. I am moved that I can be a part of this process of self-discovery.  When you have direct insight into yourself, by sharpening these insights, and finally accepting yourself just as you are, it empowers me to continue finding ways to be a part of that change.

I also want to help others to realize that there is a way out of their suffering, whether it’s chronic pain, grief, or depression/anxiety. I want to help others sharpen their insight into these "barriers", and, finally, to accept themselves "just as they are".

How I Do Therapy

With a light heart, sense of compassion, a little humor, and a clear focus I help you move towards what is important.

I will provide useful skills using mindful practices, re-energizing breathwork, education and therapeutic frameworks that help your shift perspective and create new relationship to your pain; whether it’s chronic pain, grief, anxiety, or depression.

I employ elements of Acceptance Commitment Therapy using the ACT Matrix, trauma informed care, EMDR,  psychodynamic methods and, of course, PRT (Pain Reprocessing Therapy).
