Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) might be a good fit for you.
First, rest assured that there is a way out of these repeating thoughts and behaviors.
You can learn the skills of conscious breathing, mindfulness, noticing, and activation of positive behaviors.
You can especially learn to “calm” your over-active nervous system and help you realize, that even when anxiety shows up, you can remain in charge and moving toward who or what is important to you.
We will focus on clarifying and highlighting your values, so that we keep a keen eye on moving you towards what you long for, despite anxiety’s presence.
We will pay attention to the emergence of the content of anxious thoughts and feelings and what you tend to do, and what you can do, when the anxiety comes knocking at your door.
Then, we will emphasize ways in which you can engage in specific behaviors that will move you closer to who and what you love. Ways that you choose and that matter to you!
Finally, all of these steps are done through the awareness of self-compassion. After all, being harsh towards yourself, though sometimes seemingly motivating, can be crippling in the end. But learning how to be kind to yourself - truly kind - can help give you the space you need to make changes.
